After graduation from medical school in Dublin, I trained as a physician before I swapped speciality to psychiatry. As well as expertise in general psychiatry, I have extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders in adults and led a regional multidisciplinary service until my retirement from the NHS in 2016. For over 18 years, I was the Consultant Psychiatrist and Lead Clinician for the Newcastle upon Tyne eating disorders service based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. I have particular interest in the physical complications of eating disorders and was co-author of a national guideline for management of patients with severe anorexia nervosa (MARSIPAN). I also have an interest in the co-morbidity of eating disorders in patients with Type 1 Diabetes. I hold a postgraduate certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Durham University).
